Hey all,Might be getting a scion this August. I have a few questions as I-m deciding if I should get a wrx(used) or a brand new scion. I-ve done the search, and nothing really popped up so please dont own me. If I add a turbo kit, such as the ZPI stage 0, would I have a chance of passing NYC-s emission testing (No aftermarket exhaust or other bolt ons, simply stock with turbo)Thanks in advance

Ask yourself: would I rather have the peace of mind knowing I have a brand new car straight out of the factory or a High-performance vehicle that was likely abused and beated like a 2 dollar whore?

I might be able to add some insight here since I own both an 03 WRX and an 05 tC. What are your goals for the car? That has alot to do with which one you should get. I love both cars the same but at the same time I love both for completely different reasons.

I-ve been wanting a wrx since it first market in the U.S. I love their drivetrain, and that fact that its turbo stock. I-m just tryign to keep up with my FD cousins But then again, I never knew how friendly the tC is with boost. And not to mention the bang for the buck. The tC has so many features...So tempting....Thanks for all your insight

I just recently started considering a used WRX also. But I am also worried about buying a 2-3 year old car that has been beaten to crap. I also want to keep up with my friends

Haha tell me about it, and fireworks in california are legal in some COUNTY-s...california also allows controlled fires for protection...hmmm, 300 yards of burning sensation, or a car that emits maybe 2% more pollutants than stock....YEAH...EXACTLY....(though i guess if laws were less strict, MORE people who have emission problems would exist and the total continious addition would equal more....damn i hate when i contradict myself)

I-m going to go only slightly off topic and make this thread the -Mods and Emissions- thread...I know that most likely the zpi stage 0, alphawerks headers, umnitza intake etc will never be CARB approved. Does this mean that I will not pass my smog checks in cali? Or does having non-CARB parts on my car simply mean that if an anal cop pulled me over he could write me up for a lot more than speeding? My dream would be the stage 0 kit but realistically I-d like that header/intake combo. I don-t so much care about following CARB as I do passing my smog checks...

Thats how I feel, As long as I can pass emissions I-ll be happy. I dont think I can live w/o turbo, thats the only reason why I-m considering the wrx.

CARB legal means, if you-ve got a dick of a smog/emissions agent.... You will never pass the VISUAL inspection. COPS if they pull you over, will more than likely tell you to pop your hood if they detect something...thus then asking for CARB Stickers or Numbers, and if you can-t provide them on spot, there-s your FIX-IT ticket. You-ll have to report to a station and show that everything is removed. Not being carb legal though can mean a couple of things. You may or may not pass Emissions. I have a friend who can pass the air pollutant test, in a TURBO is300, non-carb legal turbo kit...he just slips the guy 20$ to pass the visual inspection. If your car doesn-t pass AT LEAST the pollutant part, its very hard to get the car passed, as nowadays, your car-s OBD is directly connected to the Machine, which in turn, is directly connected to the DMV....HARSH...For those with sr20dets, your Engines are pretty efficient as JAPAN is really strict on emissions...so if they passed in japan, and if they are well maintained, they-ll at LEAST pass the pollutant test. You may or may not luck out with those visual inspections... But always be prepared to show Carb STickers/numbers....thats the Key....Chances are, you-ll PAY alot, to keep things under-wraps.

lol So basically californians are SCREWED when it comes to mods? I-d have to remove even an intake? lol Even bolt ons like intakes and headers are they hard to get away with? damn.

If a cop caught you, and made you pop ur hood, YEP...My father once got -hassled- about headers on his is300....ummm, no my fellow officer, those are STOCK, not aftermarket....what a DOLT...aND, california, whlie it is the HUB for import performance....many of us ARE screwed when it comes to modifications.

The turbo kit should pass a local emission test. The car is running good A/F so I do not see it being a issue. We have no intentions on getting carb certified. Thanks -ZPI

ZPIracing how much would it cost to have you guys install and tune a stage 0 with intercooler? How many days would you need the car also? As I live about three hours north of you and my company just recieved a new contract in louisville, ky which means in the fall I would be going down there for long weekends to help out with the start up.

ZPI u should consider getting carb certified so that we can pass visual inspection. Most smog emission testers are now being trained to look for certain aspects under the hood. THings such as CAI-s and headers now tip them off to ask for carb certification #-s....And now since OBDII is on all of our cars, we can only hope that your turbo kit should pass complete emissions tests, no problem, down the road. connecting thsi on board directly to the DMV makes it harder to bypass emissions testing, since obdII now carries your vin within its computer memory. However i don-t know how hard it is going to be fore you, considering Toyota/CDT are working on making certain items carb-required ie: that damn charcoal filter...hopefully they-ll work somteing out.

Your forgetting California-s CARB certification comes out of the pocket of the company who wants certified and there is no assurance a product will be certified after paying all the test cost. ZPI is located in Kentucky and has little worry of the California-s regulations. I am in Ohio who is finally phasing out -tail pipe test- in my county and most states around KY and OH only check emissions no under the hood, if they even check emissions at all. So they have a big enough customer base without california owners who want to run legal. Just look at K&N they just said forget about California. They just put the intake on the market and look they got a head start on all the other CAI intake people.I feel sorry for you in California it sucks. But look you guys in southern cali get warm weather year round but no legal turbo and I get freeze your ass off winters and a legal turbo. I think the trade off is good. The message is -Get out of California and get a turbo-

Haha, touche-...but lets remind ourselves that a big chunk of Scion tC sales is goign to the west coast, primarily california (as your dealer for a geopgrahical scion output, concord lexus let us see theres, as well as toyota vallejo) And the greater percentage of tC-s are being imported through californias ports, and Toyota-s factories in cali are considering taking on the Scion Line of the tC to save on cost.So ZPI wouldn-t be completely going OUT of line to try and attempt carb certification, the money they-ll make from kits i gurantee will outweight the time/effort/money to reach carb cert.**I only know of the geographical distr. because my dad purchasd the is300 sportcross (wagon) and since it-s popularity never reached climax here in california, they sent most of them east coast...went to New York on vacation by chance the next year, and did in fact see 10X more is300 sportcrosses there, than here.

I think Greddy or HKS may be the first guys to enter california with turbo kits if any. They got the money to back them up. I would say a lot of tC are in Cali but there are more and more here in midwest. I saw 10 today just coming from cincinatti to dayton. But I also want the turbo even more today as a Saturn Redline tried to play tag with me today and even though I would not have raced as my wife was in the car. I know my car would have lost to the supercharged engine in that car. Sucks to have no boost. That little Saturn taunted me for 25 miles or more on the interstate. I told my wife if I had the turbo I would have smoked him even with you in the car after this long of road smack.

hehe, way to sell the -turbo- idea to your wife Generally at freeway speeds, i would have just downshifted, and cut him off and not let him pass me, general idea, use other cars to block him too.... then again, you did have your wife in the car, no need to endanger your passangers...who knows, the idiot in the scion could have been packing a gun too....good luck in the future!
